Methods / Note 05
What does a mass spectrum tell you?
Learn what mass-to-charge ratios and LC–MS measurements mean when interpreting analytical evidence in laboratory research.
Mass spectrometry characterizes ions according to their mass-to-charge ratio, commonly written as m/z, and relative abundance. The displayed values concern ions; they should not automatically be read as the mass of a neutral molecule.
Keep the method in view.
The observed pattern depends on how ions are formed and analyzed. In LC–MS, liquid chromatography separates sample components before mass-spectrometric detection. Interpret the result alongside the expected structure and the analytical method.
A spectrum is evidence to interpret, not a standalone statement of every property of a sample.
