Lab practice / Note 03
Better records. Clearer research.
Use a practical laboratory record checklist covering sample identity, methods, controls, observations, and transparent research reporting.
Transparent reporting lets another reader understand what was done and evaluate the resulting evidence. Keep the research question, methods, and observations connected.
A practical notebook framework.
- Record sample identity, supplier, lot, and available characterization.
- Identify the method version, instrument settings, and experimental conditions.
- Describe controls, independent samples, and repeat measurements.
- Retain raw observations, analysis decisions, and deviations.
Distinguish what you observed from how you interpreted it. Report limitations and unexpected results as well as findings that support the hypothesis.
This framework is a learning aid. Use your institution’s approved documentation procedures for actual laboratory work.
